How to Use Mobile Broadband

If you frequently need to use the Internet on the go but often find yourself away from WiFi hotspots, mobile broadband may be the answer. Using a dongle that you insert into your laptop, you can make the most of 3G connections and work, stay in contact, and update your social media accounts on the go. Before you go ahead and choose a mobile broadband provider, there are a few logistical decisions to make.

Understanding How Mobile Broadband Works

Unlike traditional broadband, mobile broadband doesn't require a landline to connect you to the Internet. You connect to the Internet using a special device that inserts into your laptop, which is often referred to as a dongle. This usually connects to a single network. For example, Vodafone. You do not need to use the same network as your mobile phone.

Choosing the Right Mobile Network to Meet Your Needs

As any mobile phone user will know, not all networks provide the same level of coverage in all areas. Most mobile networks allow you to see how reliable the coverage is in their area via their website. To ensure you get the best coverage, it's advisable to check in advance, especially if you are opting for a pay monthly contract as opposed to pay as you go. The main network providers are Vodafone, 3 Mobile, EE, Virgin Mobile, giffgaff and O2.

Choosing the Right Package for Your Needs

Mobile broadband is surprisingly cheap, but you still need to choose the best package for your needs. Contract deals usually last between 12 and 24 months, and your data limit can range between 1GB and 15GB each month. The dongle associated with your contract is usually free, and if you go over your data limit you pay extra.

Alternatively, you can test the waters by choosing the pay as you go option. You usually have to pay for the dongle up front, and can top up when you run out of data. Some network providers offer starter packs, which includes the cost of the dongle and a limited amount of data. Similarly, you may be able to purchase a tablet or laptop using a mobile broadband contract.

Getting Started

Once you have purchased your dongle and agreed to an Internet package, all you need to do is insert it into your laptop or mac and you're good to go. Usually you need to follow some on-screen instructions, but if they don't work you can get in touch with your provider's technical support team and ask them to guide you through the process. While mobile broadband is ideal for basic Internet use, such as social media and working away from home, it isn't advisable to use it for streaming videos. Try to experiment a little at first, and keep track of your data usage as you go along.
